A passenger has found a sewing needle in a sandwich on board an Air Canada flight from British Columbia to Toronto.

A spokesman for the airline, Peter Fitzpatrick, said Air Canada contacted the caterers immediately after the incident on Monday, and have not received reports of similar discoveries.

He told the Sacramento Bee that the airline is "working closely with our caterers to ensure heightened security measures have been put in place."

The news comes just two weeks after needles were found in six turkey sandwiches on four Delta flights from Amsterdam to the US.

According to Delta spokeswoman, Kristin Baur, one passenger on a flight to Minneapolis was injured, but declined medical attention.

The other needles were found on two flights to Atlanta, and one to Seattle.
