A new range of cake bars, launched by a former accountant, claims to actually burn calories rather than pile them on.

The range of sweet treats by Klever Kalories include a number of ingredients thought to boost the metabolism.

According to trade magazine The Grocer, each Skinny Slice contains between 110 and 150 calories but added ingredients such as L-carnitine, guarana and green tea aim to give dieters a helping hand.

Company founder Saba Yussouf hopes that the range of cake bars, which come in flavours including coconut, tiramisu, chocolate sandwich and crème brulee, will fill a gap in the market for "high-quality foods that promote a trim and healthy physique".

She told the publication: "As a young, working woman with a sweet tooth, I understand the desire and effort required to stay trim but found that the low-calorie treats on the market could not satisfy my craving for an indulgent food."

The company now plans to extend the range to include cupcakes, chocolate and savoury snacks, all with the ingredients.

However, Ms Yussouf is reportedly unable to measure just how much of a metabolism boost the £1.39 bars would provide, because "everyone is different".

And registered nutritionist Charlotte Stirling-Reed told The Grocer: "Unfortunately there is no 'magic pill' when it comes to weight loss.

"The advice still stands to maintain a healthy, micro-nutrient rich and balanced diet alongside plenty of physical activity."
