Rail commuters in Cardiff 'happiest in Britain'

Rail commuters in Cardiff are the happiest in the country, according to a new study.

Factors including affordability, punctuality and overcrowding found the that those in the Welsh capital are happiest with their service, followed by Newcastle, Nottingham, Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Leicester, Sheffield, Bristol and London.

The unhappiest train commuters were found in Manchester, according to The Campaign for Better Transport (CBT), who compiled the list to coincide with the last week of public consultation by the Government on rail fares.

Commuters face another rise in season tickets of inflation plus three per cent in January.

The CBT's campaigns director, Richard Hebditch, told the Metro: "While passengers in Cardiff and Newcastle are likely to be happy with their commute, they may not be so happy if the cost of their season ticket starts to rise to levels seen elsewhere in the country, something we know the government is seriously considering.

"With rail fares already sky high across the country, and the government set to raise fares next January, the chances of finding happiness on the daily commute are going to be slim."

The news comes as a recent survey revealed that four in 10 rail passengers are paying too much for train tickets.

Rules governing different train times and tickets are proving so confusing that passengers are paying over the odds for their fares.
