A Southwest Airlines plane had to turn back to the airport just after takeoff after a "mysterious odour" in the cabin made a flight attendant sick.

Airport spokeswoman Joanne Holloway told the San Francisco Chronicle that Southwest Airlines flight 508 left Oakland at 7.12 on Tuesday headed for Burbank.

Ten minutes later, crew alerted the airport that it was returning because of an strange smell in the cabin.

The passenger plane had 139 people on board, and landed back at Oakland International Airport at 7.27am.

Holloway said the air hostess was examined by emergency medical staff, and taken to a nearby hospital.

Passengers were evacuated from the plane and put on another flight, but the source of the odour has not been identified.
