One of the richest men in the world has unveiled plans to build a replica of the Titanic.

Titanic II is the brainchild of Australian billionaire Clive Palmer, who hopes to have her on the high seas sailing from England to New York by 2016.

The news comes just weeks after the world commemorated the 100th anniversary of the tragedy in which more than 1,500 people died when the liner hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.

Mr Palmer will team up with the Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to build the ship.

According to the Mirror, he said: "It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st-century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems."

He said the ship will be fitted with "all the technology" to ensure it does not sink.

It will have the same dimensions as its predecessor, with 840 rooms and nine decks. Mr Palmer added that he wanted it to be a fitting tribute to those who built the first ship, which is "still marvelled at more than 100 years later".
