Couple 'covered in human waste from toilet of plane' in own backyard

When considering the potential hazards of sitting in your own backyard, "flying poo" isn't usually high on the list.

But for one New York couple, it became a horrible reality.

Artie Hughes and his wife were sitting in their yard in the village of Malverne at around 9pm last Thursday night, when an oily substance came out of nowhere and splattered everywhere.

Mr Hughes says he was told by a policeman that the substance was excrement that had somehow leaked from a passing aeroplane's toilet.

According to the Daily Mail, Mr Hughes told 1010 WINS: "A plane was coming over. Next thing you know [my wife] says 'Oh my God it's raining.' I said 'No it's not'".

"Some black liquid, black oil came off on her face, and I walked around and I looked and said "Oh my God".
"There was quarter-sized, nickel-sized, dime-sized drops all over my deck, my barbecue, my table."

Mr Hughes added: "He [the officer] had spoken to somebody down at either the Port Authority or the FAA and said 'Yeah, it looks like there was an incident. Some lavatory excrement had leaked out.'"

A Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) could not confirm if the muck came from a plane, but said the agency would begin an investigation.

Meanwhile (on the subject of poo and planes), a stinky nappy was this month blamed for grounding a Qantas plane flying from Darwin to Brisbane.

The Qantas flight made an emergency landing at Mt Isa after passengers and crew complained of a 'strange' smell' coming from the front cabin.

One passenger said the crew thought it might sewage, and were concerned it could leak on to the electrics, so the decision was made to land.

But the real culprit was revealed to be "a very smelly nappy dumped in the forward toilet".
