A Qantas plane flying from Canberra to Sydney was forced to turn back after one of its engines failed upon take-off.

The flight had 74 passengers on board, some of whom told the Canberra Times that they could see one propeller wasn't working.

A Qantas spokesman told news.com.au: "The Bombardier Q400 aircraft operating QF1466 from Canberra to Sydney experienced an engine problem following departure."

"The engine was shut down and the aircraft returned to Canberra, landing without incident at 10.50am."

Fire engines were in position on the tarmac when the plane landed, and a spokeswoman for Canberra Airport said the plane landed safely, describing the single-engine landing as "textbook".
