American Express have slipped up by sending customers a mail-out advertising a luxury seven-night cruise on the Costa Concordia.

The cruise was set to run between February 25 and October 29 this year, but on January 13 the liner ran aground near Giglio, Italy with more than 4,200 people on board.

To date, 17 passengers have been confirmed dead and at least 15 are still missing.

The adverts were sent to card holders in Florida, and later appeared on a Washington Post blog before being reported in the New York Daily News.

The unfortunately-worded mailer encouraged customers to "immerse yourself in a truly European experience" for the bargain price of $749.

American Express spokeswoman Christine Elliot explained that the mailers were produced long before the accident and said: "The mailing was already underway when the accident occurred. We apologise for any inconvenience to those who received it."
