Around 3,000 Britons are expected to apply for just 36 jobs that have been advertised in the Antarctic.

Record numbers of tradesmen are applying for jobs as plumbers, electricians, chefs and carpenters to support climate change scientists working with the British Antarctic Survey, according to the Express.

And they're willing to brave five months of permanent darkness and temperatures plunging to below -40C to do so.

There are five BAS bases in the South Pole, and the company is offering a salary of £23,700 as well as a 10% end-of-service bonus, all food and accommodation costs covered, as well as suitable outdoor clothing.

The company's HR boss James Miller told the Mirror: "It appears a symptom of the economic slowdown that we are receiving so many job applications for our bases.

"After arriving in March, staff remain until October – there are no visits or opportunity to get in or out."
