As if returning to work in between Christmas and New Year isn't bad enough, many commuters faced back-to-the-office rush-hour delays today.

A signalling problem at Teddington in south west London caused delays to South West Train services, with no trains able to run between Shepperton and Teddington, according to the Independent.

A faulty train at Imperial Wharf in London caused delays for travellers on Southern and London Overground companies, which led to a suspension of services between Clapham Junction and Kensington Olympia, also causing alterations on other routes in the area.

What's more, according to the Press Association, engineering works in Edinburgh's Haymarket area caused delays in Scotland to services run by a total of five train companies, including East Coast, Virgin West Coast, and ScotRail.

Meanwhile, research by Hotels.com has said that today will be the busiest day of the year for booking holidays online - thanks to the back-to-work and post-Christmas blues.

The website predicts that internet traffic will peak at 5.38pm today, when thousands of people finish their first day back in the office, according to the Daily Mail.

The Post Office Travel Money suggests that Spain is still the cheapest destination in the Eurozone, and predicts that Poland, Ukraine, and Croatia will be popular in 2012.

Thailand is also predicted to be a 2012 hotspot, coming in as the third cheapest holiday destination in the long-haul market, behind Sri Lanka and Mexico.
