Better wi-fi coming next year

But from next year a new and improved version will be available that is promising to deliver speeds of up to 1.3Gbps - allowing music to be downloaded almost instantly and movies to be streamed throughout the home.
Router manufacturer Broadcom is planning to demonstrate the capabilities of its snappily titled new 802.11ac router early next year at a trade show in Las Vegas - and says the new routers will be shipped towards the end of 2012.
The new technology is promised to offer around double the range, to be better at penetrating walls, to hold a connection better and to support multiple devices more effectively.
Some of these benefits will be aided by using the "less crowded" 5Ghz channel, the company claims.
Rahul Patel, the company's VP of wireless, said: "At 5Ghz you have 20 odd channels to use so you have more power and reach, there's a much wider highway for the traffic."
