Workers to celebrate Jubilee with four-day break

Updated

Workers are expected to be given a day off work to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee next year, culminating in a four-day Bank Holiday break.

Dubbed the Jubilee Weekend, the holiday will stretch from Saturday, June 2 until Tuesday, June 5.

The break has been made possible by delaying next year's Whitsun Bank Holiday, which is usually in late May, until Monday, June 4, and adding another Bank Holiday on Tuesday, June 5.

Downing Street is hoping that the move will build on the 'feelgood factor' created during last month's Royal wedding when Britons were given the day off work to celebrate. The plans are expected to be announced by Buckingham Palace on Thursday.

Millions are expected to join in the celebrations which will culminate with the Olympic Games in London.

One of the highlights is expected to be The Big Jubilee Lunch, launched by the Palace and the Eden Project, where neighbours will be encourages to share a meal.

A Whitehall source gold the Daily Mail: 'We hope everyone will join in by holding street parties or other celebrations to mark a very special weekend.'

Another highlight is expected to be the flotilla of 1,000 boats which will cruise down the Thames on Sunday, June 3, led by the Queen's Royal Barge. It will be the largest river pageant to take place in Britain since the reign of Charles II.

The Queen, who will be 86 next year, will become only the second British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee. Queen Victoria was the first in 1897.
