Unite, the union representing the majority of BA flight attendants, said 83 per cent of voters were in favour of further industrial action in a long-running dispute with the airline that resulted in 22 days of strikes last year.

Though no specific dates have been named as yet, the union must strike within 28 days of the vote, allowing seven days' notice before walking out.

And since the action is designed to hit BA bookings as hard as possible, the Easter break, royal wedding and May half term holiday are likely to be prime targets.

Speaking about the row over cost-cutting, Len McCluskey, the £97,000-a-year general secretary at Unite, said: "We urge BA's boardroom to see this as a clear message they must think again about how to regain the trust and confidence of a significant part of their cabin crew."

BA insists there is already a contingency plan in place to "keep BA flying" but, with Spanish airport workers also planning a walkout at Easter, holidaymakers face a miserable time if they go ahead with foreign travel plans.

Mr McCluskey advised: "Don't go on holiday."

Bob Atkinson from travelsupermarket.com, however, advised anyone attempting a holiday to take out travel insurance and ensure that they have up-to-date contact information for airlines.

Right now though, watching the royal wedding at home is beginning to look more and more appealing.
