Take three: walking festivals in and around Wales

Updated

From next weekend keen walkers can explore the beauty of the Brecon Beacons National Park (pictured above) in Wales when the Crickhowell Walking Festival kicks off.

Running from 26 February to 6 March, there will be more than 70 guided walks suitable for all ages and abilities. Can you hack the Fan Dance? RAF trainers will put you through your paces on a walk that's so tough it's part of the selection process for the SAS.

But it's not all about hardcore hiking. Take a more gentle stroll through the Glanusk Estate or attend a concert at Patricio church then follow the singers through the surrounding hills to the ruined Llanthony Priory to conclude the performance.

And if you've not already had enough of the upcoming royal wedding, you could celebrate it in a different way by joining the first Tregaron Walking Weekend, which takes place from 30 April to 2 May in the Cambrian Mountains.

The weekend includes a three-and-a-half-mile family walk led along the Catrin Trail and hike on seven-mile Great Elephant Trek.

Over the Welsh border, in Herefordshire, the county's annual walking festival will be celebrating its 10th anniversary from 18 to 26 June.

More than 60 guided walks will give participants the chance to explore 2,100 miles of public rights of way and the long-distance Herefordshire Trail.

Don't forget to download Cumbria Tourism's new app – designed in conjunction with ViewRanger mobile GPS – which makes a series of the Lake District's most popular walking and cycling routes available on your phone.

As well as maps, the app allows visitors to the area to download GPS navigation and local tourist information to their phones. You can download the app here.

Time to buff up your boots and get out and explore.
