There's nothing like a cute snuggly outfit for winter. While the new arrival will no doubt boast a cupboard full of blankets and warm clothing, how about something just a little bit more special?

For instance, a pair of Fair Trade alpaca Superfluffies (£29.95) will keep newborn tootsies toasty - these hypoallergenic slippers, with fur 30 per cent warmer than merino wool, are unbelievably soft... so soft, in fact that you'll want your own pair. Thankfully there's a matching set for mum available from Babes with Babies too.

This gorgeous store also boasts last year's baby Gift of the Year - the Silk & Bamboo baby blanket (£45). Thermo-regulating and hypoallergenic, this tactile cream blanket is ideal for boys or girls.

Or if you're looking for real luxury, a pure cashmere blanket (£149) is irresistible. Available in chunky blue or pink and white stripes, it really is as soft as a baby's bottom. It's worth using their gift-wrapping service too!

Blankets are one thing, but something to cuddle up to is always a must. While any self-respecting baby more than likely has a cot full of cuddlies, try The White Company where you may not be able to resist Bashful Bunny and Peanut Monkey (from £7).

Of course, new mums and dads, as doting as they may be, are always relieved when their little one is occupied and no youngster should be without a rattle. Natural Baby Shower have just the thing, with a range of traditionally-styled wooden toys, pram strings and baby gyms from just £5 that should give mum and dad time for a cup of tea.

In the unlikely event that the parents need occupying, however, why not buy them a baby casting kit. Available from Babycity.co.uk, a starter kit costs just £24.99 and allows parents to keep a reminder of those tiny fingers and toes with a life cast.

For something a little bit different, www.notonthehighstreet.com does exactly what it says on the tin - we just loved the film quote babygrows ("nobody puts baby in the corner"... need we say more?) - but this online store also offers accessories and keepsakes that can be personalised for an extra special touch.

And if you are looking for something truly festive for the new arrival, Mothercare's "My First Christmas" t-shirt is just £11 while a little Rudolph woolly hat (£10 complete with antlers and matching mittens) will ensure there are smiles all round.
