Video: World's fastest Mustang driver survives 265mph crash

Updated

We're accustomed to seeing roll cages save the limbs and lives of WRC drivers, but if you've ever wondered how effective a few lengths of tubular steel can be during a real high-speed tumble then take a quick look at this video recorded at last month's annual World Finals speed event held at the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Danny Thompson was attempting to beat his record speed of 256mph in a heavily modified 1,100bhp Ford Mustang when the car flipped end over end on the salt. He was doing 265mph when he lifted off thanks to a lack of downforce.

According to reports the Mustang rolled for almost a quarter of a mile before coming to a stop. Thanks to the incredibly well-built metal cocoon around his squidgy body, Thompson emerged from the wreck completely unscathed. As did the iPhone which he'd left recording next to him.
