Button questions early pitstop strategy

Updated

McLaren's Jenson Button was both pleased and disappointed to end his podium drought with second place in Monza on Sunday. He took the lead from the start and stayed there until the pitstops when he took on a new set of tyres one lap before chief rival Fernando Alonso. However Alonso was able to put a perfect in-lap together and leapfrogged the Briton.

After the race, Button questioned whether or not the team had made the correct decision in taking their pitstop before Alonso's. "We pitted one lap earlier [than Alonso] which possibly was a mistake," Button told reporters. "The team think that the prime tyre was better than the option and it probably was a better tyre. I agree with that.

"But for me when I went out on the prime tyre I couldn't find the grip on the first lap and that's for me where I lost time. I think we made a little bit of a mistake there."
