Le Mans: Audi or Peugeot?

Updated

Since Audi first entered the Le Mans 24-hour race in 2000, the team from Ingolstadt has had an impressive run. Audi have won eight of the ten long-distance races in which they have competed on this track. There was a hiccup in 2003 when the honours went to Bentley. Their most potent rival is currently Peugeot. Last year, the French constructor broke the Germans' stranglehold on the event, and this year too, they are considered favourites to win the 78th race in the legendary series.

In 2009, it was the Peugeot 908 Hdi FAP driven by ex-Formula One star Alexander Wurz, David Brabham and Marc Gene that took the chequered flag. This was followed across the line by a second Peugeot driven by the trio of Sebastien Bourdais, Franck Montagny and Stephane Sarrazin. Last year, Audi had to settle for the third rung on the podium, but they are determined to do better this time. "It is our aim to atone for last year's result with an outright win," said Audi motorsport principal Dr Wolfgang Ullrich with a degree of optimism.
