New car CO2 emissions continue to fall

Updated

The average level of carbon dioxide emissions from new cars has fallen by five percent in the last year, putting most major car manufacturers on track to meet 2012's European Union targets.

New figures from Clean Green Cars reveal that most major car makers are continuing to take huge steps towards significantly reducing their environmental impact by using clever engineering solutions and building smaller vehicles.

Three manufacturers – Toyota, Fiat and Mini – are already below the EU's 130g/km target level for average emissions, which comes into force in 2012. All three manufacturers sell mostly small or hybrid cars in Europe, but other manufacturers, including BMW and Audi, are also on the correct 'glidepath' to reduce CO2 and meet the targets.
