UK and Ireland to share banned-driver details

Updated

A law has come into force that sees the UK and Ireland sharing the details of banned drivers – meaning those who stopped from driving in one country can't escape punishment when they get home.

The law will only see drivers that are banned have their punishments carried over to their home country – there is nothing in place to recognise minor speeding offences.

This is the first step towards the sharing of information between all European countries that is required under the 1998 European Convention on driving disqualifications.
