It's A Wonderful Life (1946) has, like most seemingly schmaltzy Christmas films, a darkness to its heart. The suicidal protagonist, George Bailey, is impeccably played by James Stewart. An angel shows him via flashback of what the world would have been like without him in it, and attempts to coax him back to his family for Christmas.

One Christmas film that is more famous for its title song is White Christmas (1954). The song, "White Christmas" was originally written by famous songwriter Irving Berlin in 1940, and the version that Bing Crosby sang in the film became the best-selling single of all time.

Also renowned for its title track is The Snowman (1982). The Raymond Briggs' children's animation is silent apart from the haunting song, "Walking in the Air", which was performed by choir boy Peter Auty. Everyone thought it was sang by Aled Jones, however his version was a single-released two years later.

Bill Murray brings his comedic timing to Scrooged (1988), an update of Charles Dickens' novel, "A Christmas Carol." In this version Murray, a cynical and arrogant TV executive, is shown the error of his ways by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.

Okay, it has nothing to do with Christmas, however The Wizard of Oz (1939) is a staple of Christmas viewing. With Dorothy dreaming of a life "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", it's infiltrated popular culture in so many ways. It's usually guaranteed to be on the box either at Christmas or on New Year's day.

Say after me, "There's no place like home, there's no place like home..."
