Formula One: New format with 40 cars?

Updated

The list of fresh recruits lining up to compete in the 2010 Formula One season gets longer by the week, which obviously strengthen Max Mosley's position considerably. So just how long is this list of potential newcomers? Along with Williams, nine new teams have already signed on the dotted line. Lola, Prodrive, Campos and US F1 were the first racing stables to register their interest in contesting next year's championships. After them came March, Litespeed, Brabham and Superfund, some of which are names that hark back to the earlier years of F1 history. Epsilon-Euskadi is the ninth potential newcomer.

Max Mosley now has a list of ten teams who have already made known their intentions – presumably without any strings attached either. They are up against the nine member teams of FOTA who have adopted a collective position, making their continued participation dependent on a certain number of conditions. What is Max Mosley to do with so many teams? If there were 20 of them, all competing for the Formula One title, that would mean finding room for 40 cars on the starting grid. And it could be even more: rumours are that Carlin, Manor and N.Technology have also expressed an interest in racing at the top level of motorsport.
