New York: Times Square pedestrianised

Updated

Michael Bloomberg, the Mayor of New York, has grand plans. He intends to turn the city into one of the greenest in the world. Calming the traffic in Times Square is one component of this project. A section of bustling Broadway has been completely pedestrianised and, from now on, no cars will be allowed between 42nd and 47th Street on Times Square or between 33rd and 35th on Herald Square. The traffic barriers went up last Sunday evening (24th May). In early spring, there had already been discussions about setting up a pedestrian-only zone around Times Square. In an official statement, Mayor Bloomberg announced that one of the top visitor attractions is now the preserve of pedestrians.
