Tesla S: Planet-saving family car

Updated

There's no reason why an eco-friendly car can't also be a family-friendly car. Tesla have unveiled their new five-seater Model S saloon. Like its Roadster brother, the S promises sporty performance. However, it is set to cost significantly less whilst covering a greater distance on a single charge. There are three different battery packs available with which the Tesla can manage a range of 160, 220 or (maximum) 300 miles. After 45 minutes plugged into the mains, the batteries are 80% charged up. The lifecycle of these power packs is estimated to be up to ten years. And so that the whole family can go on holiday, the boot will swallow up any amount of luggage. According to Tesla, the electricity bill works out at £1.50 per 100 miles (= €1/100km). But take all the time you want planning your next holiday, because the S won't be arriving in the showrooms until late 2011. They are already taking online orders via the internet though.
