Also the old favourites Pontin's and Butlins have revamped themselves and offer lots of deals for the half term.

If you can't get away for a week then theme parks are the ultimate day trip choice for children. The top searches in theme parks include Chessington World of Adventures, Thorpe Park and Alton Towers. But don't forget that there are many other adventure parks to choose from such as Go Ape and other aerial rope assault courses. There's also Legoland in Windsor and Gulliver's Theme Parks.

For a more educational day trip, here are some of the hottest searches in museums for kids: London's Science, Natural History and Transport Museums, the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, National Museums Liverpool and Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry. Another sources of 'edutainment' are Britain's historic castles such as Leeds Castle, the Tower of London housing the Crown Jewels, Warwick Castle, Edinburgh Castle and Alnwick Castle which featured in the Harry Potter movies.

It's a well known fact that kids love animals, so this half term why not visit a zoo or safari park? If there aren't any near you, you could visit a farm or city farm where children can meet and pet the animals and learn about where food comes from!

If you have to keep the kids closer to home but would like some peace and quiet, take them to the cinema. Search for your local cinema and find out what's on over half term. Top movie searches include Hotel for Dogs, the Pink Panther 2 and Bolt. You could also buy or rent DVDs online - top searches include Madagascar 2 and Igor.

Do try to get children to exercise over half term - search for sports for kids such as football and netball clubs. You can also check out your local sports centre for kids' half term activities. Organising games for the garden such as sack races and three-legged races is another top search.

Exercise your children's imaginations too over half term by searching for craft activities. A few supplies from craft shops or the supermarket can ensure hours of fun baking in the kitchen, painting pictures, making toys, costumes – and a mess! Try searching for fun kids recipes or crafting for kids.

And finally, you don't need an excuse to have a party and they can be a great way to keep children entertained at half term. They can be involved in the planning and preparation – first pick a theme like pirates, pirates or cowboys and girls. Then choose food to suit the theme and make costumes!
